-
Aging in place requires careful planning, including decisions about simple changes to reduce your fall risk, with safety, mobility and daily activities in mind.
-
Occupational therapists assess and address a person's performance skills and performance patterns that are tied to older adults’ fall risk including physical skills such as strength and balance, and psychosocial aspects such as depression/anxiety, confusion and fear.
-
This emphasis on the person allows us to also address other fall risk issues such as exercise and activity, medication management, low vision issues, postural hypotension management, socialization and meaningful activity, and recommendation of appropriate footwear in addition to home modification for a holistic approach to fall prevention.
-
Occupational therapists can use client education to change behavior and improve older adults’ falls self-efficacy—that is, their confidence in performing activities without falling (Cheal & Clemson, 2001; Peterson & Murphy, 2002)
