Our evaluations and training take place right at your home and in your own community, giving you the comfort of familiar surroundings. If needed, we also help you choose and learn to use adaptive equipment to make driving safer and easier. And when it’s time to plan for the future, we provide education and support for driving retirement, helping you explore alternative transportation options and stay active in your community.

4 / What is a Driver evaluation (EVAL)?

comprehensive driver evaluation is an assessment of an individual’s driving.

It includes 3 main steps:

Step 1: A review of clinical testing of sensation, vision, movement, & thinking.
Step 2: A behind-the-wheel assessment in a driving rehab vehicle.
Step 3: Discussion of outcomes.

5 / How Long Does a Driver eval takE?

All 3 steps together will take 3-4 hours.

6 / Can I use my own car for the eval?

The on-road portion of your driving evaluation takes place in our driving rehabilitation car, which is specially equipped for added safety and adaptive features.

We understand that driving a different car can take some getting used to. That’s why, before the evaluation begins, we’ll give you time to adjust to the vehicle and its controls so you feel comfortable and confident before we start driving.

7 / What are possible outcomes of a driver eval?

After you complete both the clinical and on-road parts of your evaluation, we’ll review the results with you, your family, and your doctor. We’ll explain how your current abilities relate to safe driving and discuss next steps.

Your results will be shared with your doctor for final review and will show one of the following outcomes:

  • Fit to drive

  • Needs additional training or rehabilitation

  • Temporary hold — reassessment recommended after recovery or progress

  • Driving retirement — safety concerns make continued driving unsafe

8 / Will you take away my driver's license?

No. As driver rehabilitation professionals, our role is to evaluate your driving skills and understand how any illness, injury, or change in ability may affect your safety on the road. We work closely with you, your family, and your doctor to set safe and realistic driving goals.

In some cases, we may be required to share results with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), but we will always discuss this with you first. Only your licensing state DMV has the legal authority to suspend, restrict, or revoke a driver’s license.

9 / When is driving training recommended?

Driving training may be recommended if you haven’t driven for a while, are recovering from an injury or illness, or are learning to use adaptive driving equipment. After your evaluation, your specialist will discuss any training recommendations and create a personalized plan to help you reach your driving goals.

Training sessions usually last 2 hours, and the number of sessions varies depending on each driver’s needs and progress.

10 / Do I Need to be able to get in the car by myself to be tested?

Yes. To take part in our driving evaluation program, you must be able to independently get in and out of a standard sedan driver’s seat. This ensures your safety and allows us to complete the evaluation properly.

11 / What If I'm Not comfortable driving someone else's car?

We understand that driving a different car can take some getting used to. Before the evaluation begins, you’ll have time to adjust and practice with the vehicle until you feel comfortable. Once you’re ready, we’ll start the evaluation by driving on familiar routes in your community, then move on to less familiar areas to assess your skills in a variety of situations.

12 / What should I have ready for the EVAL?

Please have these items with you at the time of your appointment:

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Physician referral ordering “OT Driving Evaluation and Treatment”

  • Completed Intake & Signed forms (online)

  • Payment (Checks made out to ‘Limitless Living Solutions’)

13 / what if my driver's license is suspended?

If your driver’s license is suspended, please contact us — we may still be able to help. We understand the state licensing and permit processes and can guide you on the steps needed to regain your driving privileges when appropriate.

14 / What if I'm a new driver?

New drivers are eligible for a pre-driving readiness evaluation and then referred to a local driving instruction program for education and training.

15 / Why do I need a referral from my doctor?

Many of our clients are recovering from a medical illness or injury or have chronic or progressive conditions and therefore need to secure their doctor’s permission to participate in the driving evaluation. The referral order for an “Occupational Therapy Driving Evaluation & Treatment” serves as permission to evaluate you. Our fax number is 816-300-9681.

16 / What paperwork will I need to sign?

Prior to your appointment, you will be provided with online access to our forms, including a medical release, a release of liability, and an attestation of driver’s license. Please take your time to read and sign these forms carefully. Please note that we require all forms to be completed and signed before participating in our program services.

17 / when is payment due?

Payment is due at the time of service via check or credit card. Checks may be made out to ‘Limitless Driving Solutions’ or 'Limitless Living Solutions.' Your specialist will collect payment at the start of your appointment. A superbill is available upon request.

18 / is a driver eval covered by insurance?

Driving evaluations are typically not covered by health insurance, and we do not bill insurance. Limitless Driving Solutions (LDS) provides driving evaluation and treatment in exchange for a fee. LDS is a fee-for-service program. Payment is due at the time of service. If your insurance provider does cover this service, we can provide you with a "superbill" so you can submit it for possible reimbursement. Any insurance filing is the responsibility of the client.

19 / May I use my HSA for these services?

Your driving evaluation is being provided by a licensed occupational therapist with advanced training in driving rehabilitation in order to review your medical fitness to drive. Please consult with your Health Savings Account terms to confirm if this service is approved for HSA billing.

20 / Is there a Travel Fee for the Eval?

We do not charge for gas or mileage for most local evaluations. However, because we serve a large region, a $25 travel fee applies for every 15 minutes of drive time beyond 30 minutes from the Limitless Driving Solutions office (64157). Travel fees for out-of-area evaluations are set on a case-by-case basis.

Travel Fee (beyond 15 minutes)

  • 0-15 minutes, no fee

  • 16-30 minutes, $25 (Fee waived on evaluation within 30 minutes.)

  • 31-45 minutes, $50

  • 46-60 minutes, $75

  • 61-75 minutes, $100

  • 76-90 minutes, $125

  • ETC

21 / what if i need to cancel my appointment?

When you schedule your appointment with us, we block several hours to provide you with individualized care. We understand that things do come up, and you may need to reschedule your appointment. Should you need to reschedule, please do so at least 48 hours in advance of your appointment. This will give us enough time to revise our schedules.

Appointments canceled within 48 hours are subject to a $50 cancellation fee. Cancellation fees will be billed directly to the client via invoice.

Limitless Driving Solutions follows inclement-weather closures from local school districts, and no cancellation fees apply.

22 / when Might I need adaptive Driving equipment?

If you have loss of sensation in your right foot, or have lost the use of your arm or leg, there may be adaptive equipment options to make it easier to drive. During your driving evaluation, we will help select and trial adaptive equipment options.

Common adaptive driving equipment options include hand controls, left-foot accelerators, steering devices, and adaptive mirrors.

23 / How long does it take to learn to drive with adaptive equipment?

Learning to drive with adaptive equipment requires training, support, and time.

  • Training for equipment may range from a few sessions to several weeks, depending on your adaptive equipment needs. After your driving evaluation, we will provide an estimate of anticipated training needs.

  • Support is provided to facilitate your process through your state’s adaptive driving equipment licensing procedure. Many states have adaptive equipment processes in place for licensing to drive with adaptive equipment, and may include paperwork and a driving test at the department of motor vehicle office. Depending on your state, this process may take several weeks.

  • Expertise for equipment will be provided to help find an equipment vendor, to select & prescribe the equipment that best fits your needs, and to ensure installed equipment works well for you in the car.

While learning to drive with adaptive equipment may take some time, your skilled driver rehabilitation specialist will support you every step of the way!

24 / I already drive with adaptive equipment, but need an updated prescription. Can you help?

Experienced, licensed adaptive equipment drivers seeking an adaptive equipment prescription may benefit from a modified evaluation process at a discounted price. Please reach out directly to our office for information.

Clients learning to use new adaptive driving equipment are subject to the comprehensive driving evaluation and training process.

25 / How much does a driver eval cost?

In the Midwest, Comprehensive Driving Evaluations range from $400 to $750. At Limitless Driving Solutions, our pricing is $500, and evaluations take 3-4 hours.

26 / Do you use driving simulators as part of your driving rehabilitation program?

No, we do not use driving simulators as part of our program. For comprehensive driver evaluations, on-road assessment is considered the gold standard because it reflects real-world driving in real traffic and everyday conditions.

While driving simulators can be a safe and cost-effective training or prescreening tool in some settings, they do not fully capture the complexity of real-world driving. For that reason, our services focus on direct, on-road evaluation and training to best assess driving safety and readiness.

27 / What makes Limitless Driving Solutions program different from other driving rehabilitation programs in Mo and KS?

At Limitless Driving Solutions, we help Kansas City seniors live safely at home and on the road.

We come to the client’s home, so there is no need to find transportation for an evaluation or training sessions. On-road assessments are completed in the client’s own community, using familiar routes and real-life driving situations.

All evaluations and training are individualized. We focus only on the driving skills that are relevant to your daily life and make personalized, specific recommendations on equipment and strategies for safe driving.

If driving retirement is recommended, we do not leave clients to figure it out on their own. We provide support with planning, strategies, and hands-on practice using alternative transportation and getting everyday items like groceries and medications.

Services are provided by a veteran occupational therapist with 28 years of experience across all care settings. This allows us to also screen for other safety risks that could affect aging in place. While driver evaluations are not covered by health insurance, home safety evaluations, medication management training, and driving retirement support are typically covered by Medicare Part B. Our other business division, Limitless Living Solutions, is a Medicare Part B provider in both Kansas and Missouri, and outpatient OT services in the home may be covered.
