Driving Retirement

For many older adults, driving is tied to freedom, identity, and community connection. When driving stops suddenly, the emotional impact can be as challenging as the logistical one.

At Limitless Driving Solutions, we believe in proactive driving retirement planning—just like financial planning or healthcare planning—so the decision is thoughtful, not crisis-driven.

Many people put off thinking about whether or not it's still safe to drive. But avoidance often leads to:

  • Accidents or legal consequences

  • Emergency decisions without planning

  • Sudden loss of independence

At Limitless Driving Solutions, we normalize driving discussions early—often during home safety assessments or other home based therapy—so families aren’t blindsided.

Driving Retirement Defined

Driving retirement is…

  • Not a failure—it’s a smart and responsible choice that helps keep you and others safe.

  • Recommended based on changes in the skills needed for driving

  • Planning to prevent, rather than waiting for a crisis.

  • Staying active, social, and independent by using other ways to get around, like rides from friends and family, senior transportation services, or apps like Uber.

Age-related Changes

Many skills and factors allow for the safe operation of a car. There are some normal age-related changes that can affect a person's ability to drive. They include:

  • Declining vision (night vision, glare sensitivity)

  • Slower reaction times and reduced coordination

  • Multiple medications with side effects like dizziness or confusion

  • Changes in the absorption and metabolism of medications

  • Higher crash risk at intersections or when turning left

  • Mild cognitive changes that affect attention, processing, and decision-making

No single test determines driving safety. Multiple tools—evaluating vision, sensation, cognition, reaction time, strength, and coordination—are needed to provide a complete picture.

Plan Ahead

  • Ask your doctor to refer you to an outpatient Occupational Therapist who screens for driving

  • Have a driving risk screening every 6–12 months if you have a progressive health condition

  • Create a driving retirement plan with your family and care team

  • Start practicing other ways to get around to stay independent

after your risk screening

You and the OT will discuss your next best step:

  1. Keep driving and plan another screening in 6–12 months

  2. Keep driving with changes or strategies

  3. Complete an on-road driving test with Limitless Driving Solutions, or

  4. Hold driving and start your driving retirement plan

Your Driving Retirement Plan

A Driving Retirement Plan is a simple, personal plan that helps older adults get ready for the time when driving may no longer be safe. The goal is to stay independent, active, and connected—even after giving up the keys. This plan looks at current and future transportation needs and lists options like public transit, rideshares, community programs, or help from family and friends. It also encourages practicing these options early so the change feels easier when the time comes.

The plan includes clear, ongoing conversations about driving safety and common warning signs. These may include trouble checking blind spots, problems using the pedals, getting lost on familiar routes, missing traffic signs, having more “close calls,” or feeling anxious behind the wheel. Loved ones may also notice changes or express concern. When these warning signs appear, the plan encourages the person to get a driving evaluation or consider stopping driving.

As part of the plan, the individual signs an agreement stating that if trusted family members, caregivers, or professionals notice warning signs, they will follow through with a driving evaluation or retire from driving if it is no longer safe.

Together, we choose reliable transportation options and plan how to get to appointments, grocery stores, social events, and other essential places.

The goal of a Driving Retirement Plan is to help older adults stay safe, confident, and connected—even when it’s time to stop driving.
